THE BLACK HOLE – JANIRE NAJERA

(Thurs 31 July – Sat 23 August 2014)

Janire Najera’s work documents the last days of The Black Hole, a military surplus store in northern New Mexico. For over 40 years its owner Ed Grothus, known as Atomic Ed, salvaged vast amounts of equipment and ephemera from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, turning a former grocery store into a mecca for technological obsolescence. Presenting a selection of the remaining relics and artefacts, these photographs reveal a curiously unique history of nuclear America.

Essay: Janire Najera: The Black Hole by Eva Eicker

Mae gwaith Janire Najera yn dogfennu dyddiau olaf y Twll Du, stordy hen offer milwrol yng ngogledd New Mexico. Ers 40 mlynedd a mwy bu’r perchennog Ed Grothus, neu Atomic Ed, yn achub llwythi o offer ac effemera o Labordy Cenedlaethol Los Alamos, gan droi hen siop groser yn greirfa i ddarfodedigaeth dechnolegol. Gan gyflwyno detholiad o’r creiriau a’r arteffactau sy’n dal i fod yno, mae’r ffotograffau hyn yn datgelu golwg hynod unigryw ar hanes America niwclear.

Hiraeth – GARETH PHILLIPS

Hiraeth is a Welsh word that has no direct English translation but is often defined as a kind of homesickness or memory tinged with grief or sadness. A mix of longing, yearning or wistfulness for a place, person or memory of the past. A nostalgic reflection or memory that often invokes melancholy, as the reflection or memory is one of elation and happiness of a place or loved one that can often never be felt again.

Using the entire coastline of Wales as a catalyst, the resulting body of work witnessed Gareth’s endeavour to encounter and capture experiences of Hiraeth. To do this Gareth continuously walked nine hundred miles of coastline over a seventy-day period, sleeping in hand-constructed shelters or staying in isolated hotels or campsites, all with the aim of bringing him closer to experiences of nostalgia, memory and Hiraeth reflected in the people and landscape he encountered.

Essay: Gareth Phillips: Search for ‘Hiraeth’ by Anna McNay

Yr arddangosfa hon yw’r dangosiad cyntaf o waith diweddaraf Gareth Phillips, sy’n parhau i archwilio’i berthynas â thirwedd Cymru. Ar gyfer Hiraeth Part I, cerddodd Phillips ar hyd holl arfordir Cymru, yr unig lwybr cyflawn o’i fath yn y byd. Mae’r gwaith a ddeilliodd o hynny nid yn unig yn cofnodi’r daith ond yn sylwebaeth hefyd ar ein cysylltiad emosiynol a chorfforol cyfnewidiol â’r arfordir.
