This short course will kick-start your journey into video playback and manipulation for live events or content creation. In a move away from traditional video editing and processing, the VJ workflow is real-time, fast and fun to use.
We will look at the industry standard VJ software Resolume Avenue/Arena. This primarily gets used for concert and club visuals – but also finds its way into corporate event work, motion graphic production, projection mapping and live streaming. It attracts a wide range of creative and technical people that includes DJs, musicians, videographers, graphics designers, event producers, video technicians and audio-visual artists.
Starting from the ground up, we will become familiar with the interface – learning how to load, launch and mix video content. After the initial introduction we will build a basic performance project from scratch. From there we can add other types of material, video effects and physical controls to create a reactive performance that can be set to music or viewed on its own. We will also learn some of the technical aspects of working with video and how to develop a signature style and original content.
The workshop will be delivered by Nick Feldman, an experienced lecturer, course developer, course leader, and mentor with a strong track record in contemporary music education. He holds regular teaching positions at esteemed institutions including BIMM, the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP).
What you will learn – The history and development of live video.
– The project hierarchy and interface of Avenue/Arena.
– Building a custom VJ project from scratch.
